Siberut Island


Siberut National Park is located in Siberut Island, Mentawai Islands regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia, with an area of 190,500 hectares. This island has been designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO project Man and Biosphere in 1981.
60% of Siberut National Park area is covered by primary dipterocarp forest, mixed primary forest, swamps, coastal forests, and mangrove forest.

Forests in national parks is relatively still nature with many large trees with an average height of 60 meters.
Siberut National Park has 4 species of primates that are not found in other regions of the world (endemic), namely bokkoi (Macaca pagensis), Mentawai langur / joja (Presbytis potenziani siberu), bilou (Hylobates klossii), and simakobu (Nasalis concolor siberu .)
In addition, there are 4 types of squirrels are endemic, 17 species of mammals and 130 species of birds (4 species endemic).
Traveling to national parks in the region has not been done by many visitors and Along this time the main objects for visitors to the island of Siberut only to see the culture of the Mentawai people residing in and around national parks. In many ways, the Mentawai people are ethnic groups in Indonesia are still very traditional and most of them are animistic belief. Social activities are centered around the UMA, which is a home with a length and inhabited by 30-80 people.

How to reach the location: from Padang (Padang Muara) to Muara Siberut / Estuary Sikabaluan / Estuary Saibi using ships (3 times a week) at night, ± 10 hours
